Rebuilding My Homeserver

Side project. I have a big old ATX case with a shit ton of drive bay, and FREE SPACE.

Planning on just having a makeshift JBOD (just a bunch of disks) setup, so right now I'm scouring The online webs for HDDs. I can get them as cheap as $5 but thats besides the point

Should i rebuild my fileserver that had all of my media rips, while also using it as an archival pc? Plan on getting a scanner.

I have all the parts needed PSU, MOBO, and shit. Just gotta get a sata controller card.

Yes, an archival/media file server sounds like a great idea for that :). I could probably contribute some of my more obscure media and software to it; would be cool to make it more accessible.

I think using it for a file archival might be good, but I'm also not sure how reliable your drives are. I've had drives last for a decade but also drives that die within hours when they're both the same kind of drive and recieved the same amount of use.

Spinny metal kind of sucks but it's also the most reliable. I just get Western Digital hard drives, to be fair - the ones I've had lasted ages. For my P4 PC though, that'll be a totally different story, since I need to get IDE hard drives. :(
